This 9th grade drawing unit began by introducing them to illustration styles from a variety of cultures as a way to condition them to look for how shadow, pattern and texture in drawings are used in a drawing. They were then asked to try to use shadow, pattern and texture instead of line to delineate shapes and create content hidden within another image.

The second part of the unit was to use shading, texture and pattern to render a figure that told a story. As an added challenge, they students were asked work large and to incorporate foreshortening into their drawing.

Note: The drawings became abstracted, showing their cultural reluctance to render people.

As the drawing unit progressed you can see the application of pattern, shade, texture and foreshortening within drawings of animals; a traditional art form within their culture.

Note: Notice the difference the rendering animals instead of people made to their work.
